
The Buss family has agreed to sell a majority ownership of the Los Angeles Lakers at a valuation of $10 billion to Mark Walter, who is CEO and chairman of TWG Global. Jeanie Buss will continue to serve in her role as Governor of the Lakers after the sale.
Walter earned the first right of refusal if the Buss family ever decided to sell their 66 percent stake when he purchased Phil Anschutzβ 26 percent stake in 2021. Walter is also the primary owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Dr. Jerry Buss purchased the Lakers along with the Los Angeles Kings, The Forum from Jack Kent Cookie in 1979 for $67.5 million. Buss died in February 2013 with Jeanie Buss largely running the franchise in the years since.
The Lakers signed president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka to a contract extension in April of this year, while JJ Redick just completed his first season as head coach.
The Boston Celtics were also recently sold at a valuation of $6.1 billion, while the Dallas Mavericks sold in late 2023 for $3.5 billion. Similar to the Celtics and Mavericks, the Lakers do not own their home arena.
