Detroit Pistons free agent Malik Beasley is under investigation the United States District Attorney’s Office for being involved in gambling related to NBA games and prop bets. Beasley is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
The Pistons and Beasley were in talks on a new contract worth $42 million over three years. Those talks are now on hold, as this situation plays out.
“An investigation is not a charge,” Beasleyβs attorney, Steve Haney, told ESPN. “Malik is afforded the same right of the presumption of innocence as anyone else under the U.S. constitution. As of now, he has not been charged with anything.”
The NBA previously banned Jontay Porter from the NBA for life due to gambling on NBA games. That included games where Porter directly influenced his own stat lines for prop bet purposes.
