Shams Charania promised a crazy offseason earlier this summer, and while there have been some shocking moves, the offseason as a whole has been a bit underwhelming. This comes as no surprise, as teams have been attempting to navigate the new financial world the league is in with the first and second apron.
Even with the lack of activity, there are still some questions that need to be answered. Here are three questions we have remaining this NBA offseason.
3. Will the Spurs extend DeβAaron Fox?
When the Spurs acquired Fox prior to the trade deadline, the plan was for him to be a key part of their core. San Antonio had been looking for a long-term answer at the point guard spot for Victor Wembanyama, and Fox profiled as the perfect fit.
Things have changed since February. The Spurs got the second overall pick in the draft and did the right thing by taking Dylan Harper, who was widely regarded as the second best player in the class. Now, San Antonio has a crowded depth chart at point guard with Fox, Harper, and reigning rookie of the year Stephon Castle. Castle and Harper are both on rookie deals, while Fox is due for an extension.Β
Speaking of that extension, Fox is eligible to sign a four-year, $229 million deal next month. It will be interesting to see if San Antonio is willing to offer him that extension, given their current situation. Harper has All-NBA potential, and Castle is only getting better.
Fox is still in his prime and an All-Star level-talent in his own right, but his presence could stunt the growth of the budding young guards. The Spurs have to think about the long-term here too and they likely wonβt be able to keep all three guards. The month of August will be an interesting one in the Alamo.
2. Whoβs going to be a part of a blockbuster trade in September?
In each of the last three seasons, we have seen a blockbuster trade go down in September. In 2022, the Utah Jazz traded Donovan Mitchell to the Cleveland Cavaliers. In 2023, the Portland Trail Blazers traded Damian Lillard to the Milwaukee Bucks. In 2024, the Minnesota Timberwolves traded Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks.
Each of those deals came out of nowhere and just weeks before training camp. So who will it be this season?Β The Celtics were receiving trade calls for Jaylen Brown around draft time, but talks largely went nowhere.
Will a team give Boston an offer they cannot refuse? Will LeBron Jamesβ frustrations boil over and lead to him requesting a trade from the Los Angeles Lakers? Would the Pelicans be willing to move Zion Williamson and fully embrace a rebuild?Β
All three scenarios seem unlikely now, but September blockbusters canβt be ruled out. This leads to the biggest question I have left in the offseasonβ¦
1. What will Giannis decide?
Just a few weeks ago, Charania reported that Giannis Antetokounmpo is taking a wait-and-see approach with the Bucksβ offseason. Since then, Antetokounmpo convinced Myles Turner to team up with him, but Milwaukee got rid of Damian Lillard in the process, something Antetokounmpo wasnβt happy with.Β
While the Bucks did add Turner, the rest of the roster is very underwhelming. The backcourt rotation is questionable and inconsistent, with guys like Kevin Porter Jr., Cole Anthony, and Gary Trent Jr. as the headliners.
Kyle Kuzma was an absolute disaster last season as a Buck, leading to him being benched in the playoffs. Turner is a great floor spacer and rim protector, but he is a lackluster rebounder. This is still an extremely flawed roster.
Antetokounmpo has given no indication that he wants to leave the Bucks, but he also hasnβt emphatically said he is staying, which is causing teams around the league to monitor his situation.
Again, we have seen a September blockbuster each of the last three years. Is Antetokounmpo satisfied with Milwaukeeβs offseason? Does he think this team is good enough to compete in a weakened East? Only one person knows, and we will get an answer soon.
