Aaron Rodgers says upcoming season will be his last in NFL: 'That's why we just did a one-year deal'

To retire or not to retire. That was Aaron Rodgers‘ biggest question this offseason. The 41-year-old opted to keep playing in 2025, signing a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but even the quarterback admits that there’s a decent chance this year is his last in the NFL.

Rodgers, who is not one for definites, discussed his football future Tuesday on The Pat McAfee Show.

When asked if this is his last year in the league, No. 8 said, “Yeah, I’m pretty sure this is it. That’s why we just did a one-year deal.”

This does leave the door open a little, just enough to leave people guessing, just as they were this offseason.

The Super Bowl champion explained what went into playing another year, joining a new team and touched on what it’s been like to play two decades in the NFL, dating back to being a Green Bay Packers first-rounder in 2005.

“This was really about finishing with a lot of love and fun and peace for the career that I’ve had,” he said. “I mean, I’ve played 20 frickin years, it’s been a long run and I’ve enjoyed it.”

The Steelers are one of the oldest teams in the league, are tied for the most Super Bowl rings with six and have a history of being a tough team who wins games. Rodgers said it is fitting for him to end his career with head coach Mike Tomlin, with “great guys” and in a city that “expects you to win.”

“What a better place to finish than one of the cornerstone franchises of the NFL,” Rodgers said.

The future Hall of Famer enters his first year with the Steelers, after his short stint with the New York Jets didn’t work out for either side. In his first year with the Jets, he suffered a season-ending Achilles injury four offensive plays into the season and in his second season, the team went 5-12, with struggles across the board.

The Steelers haven’t racked up two playoff wins in a season since 2016. Tomlin holds the record for most consecutive non-losing seasons at 18 and is looking to keep up his streak this year with Rodgers leading the offense. Rodgers has not been part of a team with a winning record since 2021.

Rodgers says Tomlin was “right at the top” of the reasons he joined the Steelers.

Rodgers will become the oldest player in Steelers history, but if he wants to chase Tom Brady’s record of becoming the oldest starting quarterback to win a game in NFL history, he will need a few more years under his belt.
